Hard water vs Soft Water: Everything you need to know

Where in Australia you are located will generally determine what kind of water you have access to at your property. The team at EnduroShield Queensland regularly assist many clients with their shower screen needs, particularly those who have noticed hard water is causing their shower screen to become prematurely dirty and harder to clean.

To help you gain a better understanding of the differences between hard and soft water, and how this can impact on shower cleaning, our team of specialists have put together a helpful guide below.

What is hard water?

Water hardness is an indication of the mineral content present within the water—particularly the levels of calcium and magnesium carbonates. When water falls from the sky, it is classified as soft water. The reason for this is because it hasn’t come in contact with any form of mineral yet. As this water then makes its way through rocks or other substrates it may come in contact with, it will start accumulating dissolved solids. When the water has a higher level of dissolved minerals, it will then be considered hard water.

Do I have hard water or soft water?

Water’s level of mineral content is typically measured in milligrams per litre. There are certain levels which will determine exactly what category your water is. Usually, anything under 60mg/l will be soft water. Moderate water will fall somewhere between 60mg/l and 120mg/l and hard water will be greater than 200mg/l. Here in Australia, many cities will be lucky enough to run on soft water. However, there are still many locations throughout the country which use hard water. For example, here at EnduroShield Queensland, we have found many properties throughout QLD to run hard water.

How does hard water affect daily life?

There are many arguments about whether soft or hard water is the healthiest for us to consume. Most of the agreed-upon issues, however, are to do with the impacts hard water has on our homes. Due to the higher level of minerals present, hard water has been found to cause a more drastic and quicker build-up of limescale. This can be noticed when constant and difficult shower cleaning is required.

How EnduroShield can help

Thankfully, there are some solutions to make life easier if you have hard water. The EnduroShield coating has been designed to help create an easy clean shower screen process—even for those with hard water!
